Project Overview

The main objective was to show companies and their employees the attractiveness of public transport systems compared to car use. Especially in the New Member States private car ownership is rising rapidly. BENEFIT addressed this issue and aims to achieve a modal shift from the car back to public transport, and in the process, achieved substantial energy savings, emissions reductions and cost reductions. Further specific objectives were:
  • to raise awareness among employees and students
  • to spread the knowledge of BENEFIT and its contents in the broadest and comprehensive way (especially focus on New Member States)
  • to save energy through a modal shift towards public transport in the order of 2.3 million litres of fuel
  • to optimise information about public transport services
  • to identify and involve relevant key market players

BENEFIT made use of existing networks (e.g. ELTIS) as well as establishing new networks (e.g. through the local stakeholder forums) to reach its main target groups. This strategy formed the basis for the success of BENEFIT and prepared the ground for potential followers. In this way, BENEFIT contributed to a substantial modal shift from single car use towards the more energy-efficient public transport mode - thereby reducing energy consumption, reducing pollution, reducing accidents and enhancing the quality of life (especially in cities).
The Dissemination material consisted of: website, e-newsletters, folders, postcards, fact sheets, ppt presentations and roll-ups. The applications are well documented on the website. Together with the final brochure it summarises the experience of the BENEFIT project and provides a set of methods for followers.
